I. The Lost Space Between Question and Answer
Consider a common moment in daily working life. You run into a problem. It could be a minor programming bug, a difficult paragraph in an email, a stuck conceptual idea, or the need to draft a structure for a new project. In the past, such a moment was followed by a brief pause. A person would lean back in their chair, look out the window, pick up a pencil, or simply stare blankly at the screen for a moment. In this quiet space, in this microsecond of uncertainty, the brain mobilized its accumulated experience, activated memory traces, and attempted a first, often clumsy, estimation of a solution.
Today, this space is vanishing. Fingers automatically open a chat window. A prompt is sent in seconds. The machine instantly begins to churn out neat lines of text. The result is the immediate dispersion of uncertainty. We have saved time, but we have overlooked what we lost. That loss is not just time, but an entire internal step—the process of formulating one's own stance from a position of not knowing. The machine's response did not arrive as an aid to our thinking; it came so quickly that it preempted it.
II. The Invisible Surrender of Judgment
We often hear talk of artificial intelligence replacing us at work or beginning to think for us. However, this is the wrong perspective, drawing attention away from a subtler and more dangerous phenomenon. AI does not need to replace us by achieving human consciousness. It is enough if we ourselves voluntarily resign from making our first mental attempt.
When we leave the first step to the machine, we give up our anchor. A human's first attempt to formulate a problem—even if it is inaccurate, naive, or flawed—plays a critical role: it creates a baseline for comparison. It is a landmark on our cognitive map. If we have even a vague idea of what the answer should look like, or which direction we wish to head, we can evaluate the machine's output critically. We have a yardstick.
But if we approach the empty chat window with an empty mind, we become mere editors of someone else's text. We adopt the structure and tone imposed on us by the machine. We do not correct deviations from our original thought because we had no thought to begin with. From a subject creating with the help of a tool, we become consumers of machine probabilities.
III. The Authority of Flawless Syntax
Why is it so difficult to resist the machine's answer? The reason lies in how large language models are designed. They are generators of persuasiveness. The text they produce is grammatically perfect, stylistically polished, and radiates confidence. This external flawlessness acts on human psychology as a natural authority.
Imagine a person who speaks in a calm, cultured voice and answers any question without hesitation. Subconsciously, we are more likely to believe them than someone who stammers, hesitates, and admits doubt. Yet a language model never hesitates. It knows no shame; it knows no doubt about its own data. It presents hallucinations with the same gravity as historical facts.
If we do not hold our own version of the truth in our minds, however imperfect, we submit to the authority of syntax. Here, speed turns into prematurity. Speed is a useful property when we know where we are going. Prematurity is arriving at a destination before we have had the chance to decide if we even want to be there.
IV. Tool or Replacement?
The line between assistance and the delegation of judgment is thin and easily overlooked. Assistance means the machine performs mechanical work based on our instructions, within boundaries we have clearly defined. Delegation means we transfer to the machine the very decision of what is significant and what is not.
When we use a calculator, we do not delegate to it the understanding of the mathematical problem. We know what we want to calculate and why; the calculator simply speeds up the path to the result. But when we let AI write an outline of an essay, the structure of a presentation, or a response to a sensitive email without any prior thought of our own, we are not delegating calculations. We are delegating judgment. We transfer responsibility for the tone, the selection of arguments, and the hierarchy of values to the algorithm.
Thus, a tool that was meant to expand human capabilities becomes a silent replacement for our own decision-making. The human becomes an operator who merely approves pre-packaged versions of reality.
V. The Rule of the First Sentence
To preserve our inner orientation in the presence of machines, we do not need complex technical measures or moral appeals. It is enough to introduce one simple hygienic habit into our daily practice. Let us call it the principle of the first sentence:
“First your own sentence. Then the machine.”
Before you open the artificial intelligence interface, before you write your first prompt, take a piece of paper, open a blank document, or simply formulate a clear position in your mind. Write at least one sentence that captures your own initial state.
Ask yourself:
- What do I think about this problem right now, at this moment?
- What am I actually looking for? (What is the core of my question?)
- What is my first estimate? (In what direction could the solution lie?)
- What am I afraid of? (Where do I perceive the greatest risk or uncertainty?)
- How will I recognize a good answer? (By what criteria will I evaluate the result?)
This single sentence is your anchor. It is an imprint of your own consciousness before it was exposed to the influence of the statistical average. Once you have this sentence written down, you can work with the machine. You can let it suggest alternatives, find errors, or develop details. But you will always have something to return to. You will know whether the machine is helping you express what you wanted, or whether it has subtly steered you somewhere else entirely.
VI. An Extension in Need of a Foundation
Artificial intelligence technologies are fascinating and hold immense potential. They can serve as an excellent sparring partner, an opponent, or a mirror of our own mind. They can help us see things from new angles and speed up processes that would have previously taken us days.
None of this, however, can happen if we enter the interaction cognitively passive. AI can expand and deepen our thinking beautifully. But it can only expand what already exists. If we do not invest our own effort, our own attention, and our own initial judgment into the system, we do not obtain expanded thinking. We obtain only a mediocre dilution of what others have written on the topic before.
The responsibility for the quality of our judgment remains ours. Not because machines are bad, but because the human mind grows only by overcoming resistance and formulating its own questions. If we abandon this process in exchange for the convenience of immediate answers, we lose the most valuable thing—the ability to think independently in the silence before anyone answers.
